Challenge

A unified vision for a better digital experience

Cox Automotive is a leader in the automotive industry. It operates a portfolio of consumer and dealer brands. But its digital presence was split across eight separate websites. Each one ran on its own. That made content management slow and duplicative. It also held back the connected experience the business wanted across its brands.

Commonality across the eight sites sat at only 2%. Every brand looked and behaved differently. Every change had to be made site by site. Cox needed to bring everything onto one platform. It wanted to simplify how content was created and distributed, and enforce a coherent brand experience. All of this without flattening the identity of each individual brand.

Solution

Building the foundation for a centralized system

The eight sites were consolidated onto a single scalable enterprise WordPress platform. At its center sits the Cox Design Library. This is a central repository of reusable Gutenberg blocks, patterns, and custom post types, built with React and custom REST APIs. Editors assemble pages from pre-built elements. Structure stays consistent across brands, while each one customizes colors and styles to fit its own identity.

Blog posts and articles were centralized in a Content Hub. Teams can publish once and distribute across multiple sites. Service and campaign landing pages stay on the individual brand sites. Media assets were consolidated to cut duplication. A Digital Asset Management system is planned next.

Executing a smooth transition without disruptions

A modular plugin architecture standardized core functionality. Each brand stayed autonomous. Legacy integrations kept running while being optimized for the new platform. These included custom forms, CRM tools, Google Analytics, and Tag Manager.

The efficiency gain was direct. Seven large websites launched within 12 months. Each launch reused 70 to 80% of designs, layouts, and plugins. That cut development effort and lowered cost per brand.
